Healing can be Long and Painful

23 June 2009 No Comment

I am currently working on a prayer blanket for a lady that has an aggressive form of breast cancer, known as inflammatory breast cancer. She has already lost both breast and is under going just as equally aggressive chemotherapy.

She is such a young lady. This type of breast cancer most often affects women that are under the age of 40 and even women in their 20s.

I do not know her personally, but her sister is very dear to me and for this reason I wanted to reach out to her with a prayer blanket.

I initially set out to make a prayer shawl much like the others I had already made. But, when I was in the store purchasing yarn, a pattern of a blanket with butterflies caught my eye and I immediately knew that I had to make this for her.

This pattern spoke to me because I thought of how she must feel having lost her breast and all her hair due to the treatment. The things we as women take for granted sometimes. These are the things that affirm our femininity. God created women to be so complex and beautiful. We are fearfully and wonderfully made …

Tonight as I was working on the prayer blanket, I began to wish I had finished this and did not realize it would take so long. I really wanted to get started on another prayer shawl as soon as possible. As I thought about this, I could hear the Holy Spirit say that just like the prayer blanket, sometimes the healing process from disease can not only be painful, it can be a long road to where you can say that you have been healed.

I am praying that with each and every square I crochet and sew together and every butterfly that I crochet and sew on to the blanket, that it will be a reminder to her that just as the butterfly is enclosed in a cocoon for a period of time and then emerges majestic and beautiful, so shall she emerge from her cocoon of disease into the beautiful women God created her to be.

This prayer blanket that I am making in rose, white and accented with pink butterflies will be a reminder to her that she shall emerge from her cocoon (breast cancer) victorious and free.
