Sunshine on my Shoulders
When I shop for yarn, It’s not unusual for me to stand for an hour just looking at one selection of yarn color or fiber for minutes an even hours. I love touching the yarn and placing it next to my skin. I love thinking about what the person who receives it will feel.
I pray and ask God if it is the right fiber and the right color. Yes, I take choosing the color and fiber just as seriously as choosing the pattern to use. Sometimes I already know who the recipient will be and sometimes I don’t.
On this particular day, I went in to walmarts already knowing the type of yarn I wanted to purchase. For the last several shawls I crocheted, I used Caron’s Simply Soft and the shawls turned out beautiful and soft to the touch.
I already knew that I would be crocheting a prayer shawl for Phyllis Ferrell, a very sweet and dear lady who had contacted me months ago requesting a prayer shawl to comfort her during her bouts with Lupus, an extremely debilitating disease. At the time, I told her that I had a long wait list and that it would be a while.
After I completed several, the Lord touched my heart to go ahead and start hers. On this particular day while I was in Wal-marts, a very warm shade of yellow caught my eye. While yellow was never one of my favorite colors, this shade really caught my eye and I felt drawn to it. When I picked it up and look at the label, I noticed that the color was called ‘sunshine’. I felt the Lord impress upon my heart that this would be the perfect color for Phyllis.
Later that evening when I got home, I received an email from Phyllis, telling me that she was so excited that I was starting to work on her prayer shawl.
What she said next, both shocked me and immediately brought tears of joy to my eyes
“Dee, this prayer shawl will be like sunshine on my shoulders”
The color of yarn that I purchased to crochet her prayer shawl with was called ‘ sunshine’. I am so glad I followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit in my choice of yarn colors.
I completed Phyllis’ prayer shawl last month and sent it to her. Her is Phyllis’ testimony:
The day that I met Dee Foster I was certain she was sent from God as a special gift. Through her mission work for Beauty for Ashes Prayer Shawl Ministry she creates beautiful, warm, crocheted prayer shawls for many who ask for extra prayers and the warmth and comfort from God’s love. Dee prayers as she makes these prayer shawl and when I put my on, I felt all of the prayers and the arms of Our Father around me. My prayers will be my way of thanking Dee and the Good Lord for sending her to me.
I am asking that you keep Phyllis in your prayers that God brings healing. Phyllis truly loves the Lord and often speaks of her faith in him to see her through the pain and suffering that she endures, sometimes on a daily basis.
